CULTURE
To
travel through the Indre is to turn over the pages of a picture book : a
small village surrounding its Norman church, a mediaeval fortress dominating the
river, a flight of wild ducks above a lake, the ghost of George Sand prowls
around " la mare au diable. " During
all the summer festivals, pageants, folklore and traditional celebrations follow
one after another. : --Beginning
of July : Les Bérryades, rural fêtes at Saint-Août. -Mid-July : The international
meetings of stringed instrument players and bagpipe players at Saint Chartier.
-Mid-August : mediaeval fêtes, jousting and tournaments at the château de
Bannegon. -2nd fortnight of August : the festival DARC,all kinds of dancing
at Châteauroux. - July-August : in the footsteps of George Sand : guided
visits of the sites which she has immortalised in her novels.
